With the long-awaited sights and sounds of the season, Edmonton’s springtime brings tons of water from melting snow.
Make sure your home is protected against water damage with a few simple steps. Taking care of these in early spring can go a long way to protect your home from and set you up for a stress free spring.
1. Clean your eaves
Remove any leaves, dirt or other debris from your eaves. Go all the way around both your home and garage.
Then, using your garden hose, flush eaves clean with water. This also gives you a chance to check for any blockages or leaks in the eaves and downspouts.
2. Examine downspouts
If you notice any blocks or leaks, take time to clear and repair them.
All downspouts should lead away from houses and garages, and in the direction of the alleyway or storm sewers. They should be long enough that flowing water can’t pool near your home.
Some older homes may have internal downspouts. Consider re-routing these outdoors to avoid risk of flooding inside. We recommend asking a professional to do this work.
3. Fix sidewalks and grading
Do you best to seal cracks between sidewalks and your foundation walls.
Make sure your sidewalks and lawn slope away from the foundation. If any points slope toward your house, make it a priority to fix the grading – either on your own or with the help of a professional.
